“Let Us Be Thankful to God We Survived 2020”, Makinde Admonishes Residents

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared that residents of the state and Nigerians should be thankful to God for surviving 2020, stating that though many would describe the year as a tough one, God’s grace saw them through the various challenges that characterised the year. The governor maintained that despite various events that set the state back economically, the state government was still able to record a huge reduction in the infrastructure deficit of the state. Makinde, according to a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, stated these in a 2021 New Year Address made available to newsmen in Ibadan. He noted that though 2020 was characterised by drop in oil prices, which led to a huge drop in revenue from federal allocations and the attendant economic meltdown, the COVID-19 pandemic and the aftermath of the #EndSARS protests, among other challenges, residents of the state could still count their blessings. According to the governor, the efforts of h...

Makinde Gives Go Ahead To Religious Centres To Hold Crossover Services

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on Wednesday, approved the suspension of the 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. curfew earlier imposed on states by the Federal Government, saying that officials of the State’s Task Force on Covid-19 will ensure strict compliance to the guidelines and advisories during the Yuletide and after. The governor, has therefore, directed that religious centres be allowed to hold crossover worship services only in strict compliance with COVID-19 protocols. The Technical Team of the Task Force on COVID-19 had earlier stated that it was ruling out the crossover services in view of the 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. curfew imposed by the Federal Government. A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Taiwo Adisa, however, warned that worship centres must adhere strictly to the advisories and guidelines put in place to prevent the spread of the virus in the state. The statement further indicated that the governor gave the directives in a brief endorsed by the chairman o...

Details of the restriction showed that churches should hold their services earlier as the government is poised to enforce the curfew imposed by federal government. LAUTECH: Makinde's 2023 Political Cake

By Adeyinka OJEBAMIGBE Perhaps only Governor Seyi Makinde can say with exactness why he decided to 'butcher' Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State into pieces. It was the first time in his almost two-year term that 'Omi titun' is making a controversial decision, which from all indications can affect his  political ambition in 2023. When the National University Commission (NUC) put to rest the joint ownership of LAUTECH by Oyo and Osun states, a loud public commendation greeted the announcement of Oyo state as the sole owner with the hope that the institution will be free from her crisis and head for glory, growth and academic excellence. However, it is not difficult to say that Makinde's LAUTECH Multi-campus agenda may not be unconnected with the 2023 governorship election. The man, whatever his alleged shortcomings, appears to have a definite political strategy that is being use to console the host community, Ogbomoso. Recently, the Govern...

Guest writer, SUNDAY ADEPOJU, reflects on the contributions of the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values, Honourable Segun Dokun Odebunmi, to his constituency and Ogbomoso at large. It is a truism that Ogbomoso, an ancient city in Oyo State, South-West Nigeria, is blessed with men and women of timber and caliber who have made headway in their chosen careers. In fact, the city has produced a number of Aareona-Kakanfos otherwise known as war generalissimos of Yoruba land and notable personalities who have made invaluable contributions to the land and beyond. LAUTECH: Ogbomoso, When Silence Is Not Golden! |Adewuyi Adegbite

By Adewuyi Adegbite Ogbomoso, since the old Western region is the second largest town in the region after Ibadan, though as Yoruba used to say, “Ile ti pa ewura da, awon orisa keke wa n so wipe, Sango o pon omo re”. The exploit of Ogbomoso in Yoruba history cannot be over emphasized. For the records, Ogbomoso gave Yoruba the pure Yoruba dialect, the language used and lingua franca in Yorubaland and beyond. This pure Yoruba originated at Orile Igbon, which is the oldest settlement in Oyo state today. Also, out of about 27 oriki/orile, about 15 originated in Ogbomoso while we find people bearing about 25 out of 27 oriki/orile in Ogbomoso. Culture of drumming, especially, Iya Ilu, gangan with the exception of Sekere originated in Ogbomoso. Beside the above, in the pre-colonial era and in the old Oyo setting, Ogbomoso had three out of the four provinces. The headquarters of these provinces were at Igbon, Iresa and Ikoyi. The fourth province was headed by Iwo. That means, minus Oyo te...

Eight Years After Ogundare Foyanmu : The Unsung Hero |Sunday Ogunkuade

Tuesday, the thirteenth day of October 2020, marked the eight anniversary of the departure and transformation from mortality to immortality of the body and soul of Yoruba Ijala Iroko tree, ‘Ojogbon’ Ogundare Foyanmu Ayano, popularly known by his stage name as ‘Dare Foyanmu, a big star and legendary oral poet, who died at the ripe age of 80. He was a musical prodigy who contributed substantially and immensely to the musical, cultural and lingual development of the Yoruba people. He was a bundle of talents whose life could be regarded as woven round music like a tapestry. That day, eight years ago, it was as if there was a permanent stillness in the musical heartbeat of Yorubaland. ‘Dare Foyanmu’s gigantic contributions to the growth of African music cannot be easily forgotten. The lion is no more but his music legacy will endure. It is not an exaggeration to compare ‘Dare Foyanmu with the likes of Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Steve Wonder, Jimmy Cliff, Miriam Makeba, Fela Anikulap...

No to Merger of LAUTECH and TECH-U; Yes to LAUTECH Multi-campus System | Ismaila Ashipa

LAUTECH and TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY IBADAN There is the rumour or assumption making the beats around the Oyo state corridor of power that the Oyo state newly acquired LAUTECH is being considered for #MERGER with the TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, Ibadan. If true, the OYSG has her reason(s). The question is what is the primary import for the establishment of the two institutions. Has the word TECHNOLOGY same meaning with the word TECHNICAL. As unread as I am, I know that a University of Technology places emphasis on innovative problem-solving and career-directed courses, in addition to the basic responsibilities of a university. It focuses on higher education subjects, academics and learning, but doesn’t spend as much time teaching for specific careers. Whereas, a TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY specializes in career-driven courses that focused directly on teaching skills that apply to specific careers. In many cases, a two-year degree or technical certificate can offer graduates, and even the society, ...

Oyo Assembly passes LAUTECH bill, Favours Multi-campus

Bill to affirm the sole management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, by the Oyo State government, was passed by the Oyo State Assembly on Monday. There was however a robust session on the multi-campus provision of the bill during consideration of the report on the bill presented by the House Committee on Education, Science and Technology. Members particularly raised eyebrows on why some clauses were either inserted or expunged in the committee report, leading Speaker of the Assembly, Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin to rule that the bill be subjected to a clause by clause consideration by the entire assembly at the day’s plenary. While the principal bill provides for the establishment of campuses/colleges/faculties in other towns and cities in the state, members had wondered why three was the inclusion of the clause, “as it may be deemed necessary” in the committee report presented. While lawmakers like the deputy speaker, Honourable Abiodun Fad...

LAUTECH Bill: Ogbomoso Group Urges Oyo Assembly to Involve Stakeholders

The Ogbomoso Young Professionals in Abuja has asked the Oyo State House of Assembly not to be in what it called unwarranted haste in passing into law an Executive Bill seeking to amend the law establishing the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso. The Chairman of the group of Abuja-based young professionals, Akinloye Oyeniyi, in an interview on Sunday said the group has been reliably informed that the state House of Assembly will be passing the bill on Monday, hence the group’s clamour for involvement of stakeholders in and outside Oyo State through a public hearing. Governor Makinde had recently after securing the university sole-ownership for Oyo State, said he would be making the institution a multi-campus one. The statement was backed by Wednesday’s approval of a proposed Bill by the State Executive Council and its subsequent presentation to the state House of Assembly which immediately commenced work on it on Thursday by passing it through First and Second read...

The Ogbomoso Young Professionals in Abuja, has warmed the Oyo State governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, that his multi-campus agenda in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, is exposing the host community to more crises. Speaking on behalf of the group in a meeting with the press on Saturday, the Chairman, Akinloye Oyeniyi, said Governor Makinde’s action is already directly exposing Ogbomoso to security risk and has called on the Inspector General of Police to wade in before the issue goes out of hand. The Ladoke Akintola University of Technology was back in the news recently when its Oyo/Osun co-ownership status was eventually settled and Oyo State became its sole owner, a development which has since turned in ugly after the governor’s statement to make the school a multi-campus one. In his words, Oyeniyi said ” all Nigerians saw the level of damage that befell Ogbomoso during the #EndSars protests. A serious chaotic situation where our first class monarch, a sitti...

The Ogbomoso Descendants Development Association has rejected the proposal of the Oyo State Government to make the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, a multiple campus institution. The group, in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Aremu Kuti, alleged that the action was “a calculated onslaught against Ogbomosoland and vowed to resist such an affront.” The government’s proposal to split LAUTECH into multiple campuses has been generating controversy.
