Time to kill NBC | Festus Adedayo

The hypothesis which states that words, either written or spoken, are the worst enemy of despots and totalitarian regimes has been tested overtime. Words are lethal, superior to mortars and armaments of war and penetrate deeper than bullets. Words are equally known to eventually precipitate the collapse of despotic regimes. It then stands to reason that dictators must wage war on words. Merve Buyuksarac found out the above when it was almost too late. Crowned Miss Turkey in 2006, Merve’s brush with the imperial power of Recep Tayyip Erdogan began like a joke. On her Instagram page, assuming that poetic license shawled her from the biting proboscis of imperial power, she poured scum at what she referred to as high level corruption and sleaze in Turkey. Couching this in very inviting poetic lines, Merve located Erdogan as the kingpin and epicenter of the rot. Pronto, as the Americans say, she was arrested and on May 31, given a suspended prison sentence of 14 months. Turkey ...

Nigeria in the Shackle of Abductors and Terrorists | Inaolaji Olayode

The headline of this piece crawled to my brain while envisaging the pickle of the incessant kidnapping and the burning terrorism unleashed by the men of underworld, metamorphosing this country to an abode of dastardly acts and evil perpetrations which has almost gone haywire. As a patriotic Nigerian, this issue has to be discussed for outright panacea to be proffered swiftly. National dailies are replete with this horrendous news which has thrown gentle Nigerians to the deep pit of fear and state of mind unrest. In July or thereabouts, President Mohammadu Buhari’s convoy was brazenly attacked, two people met their untimely death, left many cars, motors perforated by the sporadic gunshots. This attack, audaciously launched by those people thirsty for blood has been making me to confirm the crystal fact that Nigerians are in replete peril. Frankly, the question that rang into my brain then was: Did the dog want to bite itself with its viperous teeth?  On Sunday,  14th Aug...

Worth celebrating Sayo Alagbe’s birth anniversary? | Sunday Adepoju

The birthday song “For he is a jolly good fellow…” aptly captures the qualities of this quintessential enigma whose birthday is today. Today is, indeed, significant as the boy (back then) journeyed to this world. When the ‘boy’ arrived, Ifá said he would be great; Ã’pè pointed out that the world would celebrate him. The boy of then has now transformed into a man of great honour and valour and he is now being celebrated today. Sayo Alagbe is an example of Omolúàbí; he is an epitome of knowledge and philosophy. One hardly leaves his presence without gaining a new thing in terms of life and knowledge; no, it’s not possible. He has special angles to special issues. Sayo Alagbe is a counsellor par excellence and has lifted many burdens away from people. Apart from being a thorough-bred journalist of high repute, he is still a ‘ generalist’ – he knows something in everything. Talk about philosophy, education, culture, religion, politics, sports, name it; he is there to have a robust con...

Kidnapping Finally Came Home, With Horror | Debo Adeosun

Late Gbenga Owolabi By Debo ADEOSUN A few days ago, I was engrossed in a heated argument with a friend who would, in a matter of weeks, be relocating to the United Kingdom. Of course, he is just one of the families I know who have concluded plans to leave. Many of my friends have since left with their entire families, having given up on their fatherland. The argument had centred around my friend’s determination to sell his house and never to return to Nigeria for any reason in the future, kind of burning the bridges behind him. I argued that North or South, East or West, there will never be any place like home. Home? He insisted home didn’t have to be your home town, state of origin or country. Then, I remembered my late mother always saying IBI TOKAN ENI BA TI BALE NILE ENI – Home is that place where you’re at peace and your mind is at rest. As I drove back home from my friend’s house, I began to...

It will be recalled that out of the 23 bonafide sons of Ogbomoso who jostled for the vacant stool, Prince Afolabi Ghandi Laoye, a U.S based Redeem Christian Church of Christ, RCCG, Pastor, was declared the Soun-designate by the kingmakers, a situation which generated uproar among the stakeholders family, kingmakers and other critical stakeholder...
