The Ogbomoso Young Professionals in Abuja, has warmed the Oyo State governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, that his multi-campus agenda in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, is exposing the host community to more crises.
Speaking on behalf of the group in a meeting with the press on Saturday, the Chairman, Akinloye Oyeniyi, said Governor Makinde’s action is already directly exposing Ogbomoso to security risk and has called on the Inspector General of Police to wade in before the issue goes out of hand.
The Ladoke Akintola University of Technology was back in the news recently when its Oyo/Osun co-ownership status was eventually settled and Oyo State became its sole owner, a development which has since turned in ugly after the governor’s statement to make the school a multi-campus one.
In his words, Oyeniyi said ” all Nigerians saw the level of damage that befell Ogbomoso during the #EndSars protests. A serious chaotic situation where our first class monarch, a sitting minister of the Federal Republic and many prominent sons and daughters were attacked and properties worth millions of Naira were destroyed. Ogbomoso is still undergoing repairs from that situation which has since greatly stretched its security situation and boom the governor who saw all that happened started toying with another sensitive issue that is capable of tossing Ogbomoso off the cliff in a jiffy again”
Oyeniyi, who is a Legislative Consultant and Public Affairs Commentator of note said the group did not take it as a serious matter when the governor initially said it then but with the Oyo State Executive Council’s approval of a proposed bill to amend the law establishing the institution into multi-campus for presentation to the House of Assembly and the neck-breaking speed at which the House of Assembly is rushing to pass the law has confirmed that indeed the the governor is truly and readily serious and he said the group which is made up young professionals of Ogbomoso origin from diverse fields shall resist such action which is capable of causing another mayhem in their already fragile land.
The state House of Assembly is currently working on the Bill which was presented to it on Thursday by the executive arm of the state. The proposed bill scaled both first and second readings on Thursday and has since been referred to the House of on Education, Science and Technology for further legislative action.
“We, at the Ogbomoso Young Professionals, are pleading with the executive governor of Oyo State to abort the multi-campus idea for security reasons and replace such with what the school is in need of right now which is fashioning out ways to return LAUTECH back to his rightful place of the best state university in Nigeria. Inclusive and equitable quality education should be the focus right now that the school is just coming out from the ruins of its no-funding co-ownership. The priority should be a place of learning that is an environment that is physically and emotionally safe for students, staff and the host community and not pushing the school and the entire Ogbomoso back into an unwarranted but avoidable crisis.”
The group calling on the Inspector General of Police to wade in said “as we reliably gathered, the governor is already feeling unsafe around the area as a result of this and could not turn up for an official function at Ogbomoso on Friday. We therefore also call on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Mohammed Adamu, to come into the matter and advise the governor not to hurt the now tender security of lives and properties in Ogbomoso as his action is already provoking anger that could lead to breakdown of law and order.
