President Bola Tinubu has announced that Adepoju Carol Wura-Ola, Deputy Comptroller General of Immigration, has been named interim Comptroller General of Immigration. The Civil Defense, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board made the appointment. According to a letter signed by the Nigeria Immigration Service board’s secretary, Ja’afaru Ahmed, the appointment will become effective on Tuesday, May 30, 2023. The letter conveyed the approval of the Chairman of the Board for Wura-Ola to assume the duties of the Office of the Comptroller General, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), as the most senior Deputy Comptroller General (DCG). The letter further encouraged her to utilize her wealth of experience and contribute to the ongoing transformation of the Service. The appointment of Adepoju Carol Wura-Ola follows the expiration of the extended tenure of former Comptroller-General Isah Jere on May 29, 2023.

President Bola Tinubu has declared that his administration will remove the subsidy on Petroleum products, noting that the era of subsidy payment on fuel has ended. The President said this in his inaugural speech at the Eagle Square on Monday after he was sworn in as Nigeria’s 16th President. “On fuel subsidy, unfortunately, the budget that exist before I assumed office and what I have heard is that no provision is there for fuel subsidy, so Fuel subsidy is gone”, he stated. According to the President, the savings from the subsidy removal would be used to invest in infrastructure, education, health, and social welfare. He also assured Nigerians that he would ensure an adequate supply of petrol and prevent artificial scarcity and hoarding by unscrupulous elements. The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has granted The Polytechnic, Ibadan licence to operate Poly Ibadan FM Radio Station. The Registrar of the institution, Modupe Fawale who announced this in a statement, on Sunday, said the right to operate the FM radio station was conveyed to the institution through a letter from the NBC with reference number: NBC/SEC/LIC/19/VOL.iv dated May 22, 2023, to the Rector of the institution, Kazeem Adebiyi. Fawale stated that the letter signed by the secretary to the commission, Igomu Onoja, on behalf of the Director General, noted that the licence was a temporary one pending the time all the required payments would be made by the institution for the application for operating a radio station submitted to the commission.

Similarly, the Governor equally terminated the appointments of political office holders, urging them to handover government properties in their custody. Bintin’s corpse and that of the unidentified student he allegedly pursued into a river at Sunsun area behind the Baptist Beulah Centre of the Ogbomoso Baptist Conference, were recovered. It was gathered that Bintin got drowned as he jumped after a student he was pursuing into a river. Policemen, Amotekun operatives, firefighters, and others reportedly stormed the area for a rescue operation but it was abortive.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has granted operating licences to 37 new private universities, including an online institution. Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists after an extraordinary FEC meeting presided by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, at the State House in Abuja. According to him, the new set of approval brings to 72 the total number of universities licensed by the Buhari administration since 2015. Adamu said, “One of the universities is an online university by a woman from Bauchi State and this is significant in the sense that we always want to have our women coming forward in education. “As far as I’m concerned, we need more universities. We are still under-university. And if there are universities that are underfunded, they should be funded. It shouldn’t affect new universities that are being established." The Kwara State Government has shut down the China Kaidi Quarry site along the Ilorin-Ogbomoso highway. The decision to seal off the quarry was taken on Monday after the inspection carried out by the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA), where numerous safety violations were discovered, including the absence of essential safety equipment for workers, inadequate training programmes, and insufficient measures to prevent accidents. Also, environmental concerns were equally raised, such as the lack of proper reclamation procedures and non-compliance with essential environmental permits and licences. Following an earlier inspection visit to the quarry a fortnight ago, the state government expressed deep reservations about the quarry’s non-adherence to safety protocols and environmental regulations .

The South-West Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, has arrested two suspected criminals pretending to be mentally-ill in Ondo State. The state commandant, Adetunji Adeleye, revealed this while parading 26 suspected criminals at the command’s headquarters in Akure, the state capital, on Wednesday. Adeleye noted that the suspects were arrested in different parts of the state for constituting security risk and nuisance and advised the public to be careful of impostors pretending to be mad persons. The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON), Zikrullah Hassan, has said the four local airlines to airlift Nigerian pilgrims for the 2023 Hajj exercise have requested that the hajj fare be increased by $250. According to him, the airlines – Air Peace, Azman, Max Air and Aero Contractors – based the request on the crisis in Sudan, which would require a longer travel time to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Recall that the airlines had refused to sign the airlift agreement with NAHCON due to the additional financial cost using another route. Speaking in Abuja during a training exercise organised for staff of NAHCON, state pilgrim boards and private tour operators on Saturday, Hassan assured that the pilgrims would not be asked to bear the additional cost. “Our local airlines after several negotiations accepted the sum of $250 to the increase in the cost of air ticket for this year’s operation. Kogi state Government has approved 65 years as the retirement age for teachers in the state. The approval was sequel to the passage of the Retirement Age of Teachers in Kogi State and Related Matters Bill, 2022, on Thursday by the State House of Assembly. Speaker of the House, Matthew Kolawale, said with the passage of the bill, teachers in the state would now retire upon attainment of 65 years or 40 years of pensionable service, whichever comes earlier. “The Public Service Rule or any legislation that requires a person to retire from the public service at 60 years of age or after 35 years of service shall not apply to teachers in Kogi from the date of commencement of this law,’’ he said.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said that the Bank Verification Number (BVN) it issues in collaboration with Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System does not have an expiry date. The apex bank revealed this in a document signed by its Acting Director, Corporate Communication, Isa AbdulMumin, on Wednesday night. This comes following a trending video alerting Nigerians on the need to revalidate their BVN after 10 years of issuance.  “The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been drawn to reports suggesting that the Bank Verification Number (BVN) issued by the Bank in collaboration with the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) expires after a ten-year period”, the statement read. “Contrary to these claims, we wish to clarify that the BVN issued in Nigeria has no expiry date. President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to the Supreme Court’s verdict on the July 16, 2022, gubernatorial election in Osun State. The Supreme Court earlier on Tuesday affirmed the election of Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party as governor of the state. The Supreme Court has fixed May 9 for judgment in the appeal filed by former Osun Governor, Gboyega Oyetola against the election of Ademola Adeleke. In his appeal, Mister Oyetola is seeking the reversal of the March 25 judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja which affirmed Adeleke’s victory in the last governorship election in Osun State. The Appeal Court had, in its judgement, set aside an earlier judgment by the Osun Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which held in favour of Oyetola and removed Ademola Adeleke. A five-member panel of the Supreme Court announced the date after taking arguments from lawyers to parties on Monday.
