Sunday Igboho and the allegory of Asantehene’s Golden Stool |Festus Adedayo

By Festus Adedayo Right now, Yoruba are no longer looking at Igboho as a person. They see him as symbolising the Asantehene Golden Stool, which Buhari wants to impudently snatch from them. They are rallying round and will continue to rally round him. This advocacy for self-determination may become a fire-spitting dinosaur or a consuming hydra, the many-headed monster of the Greek mythology. Queen Mother Nana Yaa Asantewaa was just a mother and farmer who spiced her vocation with being an intellectual, politician and human rights activist. Living in a confederate Gold Coast, now Ghana, riven by a civil war from 1883 to 1888, the moment the British exiled Asantewaa’s brother and the King of Asante, Prempeh 1, to the Seychelles in 1896, a fertile ground was laid for a deadly rebellion against British rule in Ashanti land. Frederick Hogston, Governor General of the Gold Coast, hastened the rebellion. By obstinately demanding for the Golden Stool, which was the symbol of the Ashanti n...

Sunday Igboho and the Malala Yousafzai spirit |Babafemi A. Badejo

By Babafemi A. Badejo The Federal Government can only shoot a body or jail a person. They cannot shoot his/her dreams. Sunday Igboho’s dream of a just, fair, equitable treatment for his people has already been kindled and it cannot be killed through incarceration or elimination. In fact, the FGN is unwittingly making Sunday Igboho a martyr when he should not have been one, among a sophisticated and highly educated people. But since the Yoruba lack selfless visionary leaders, there is room for an activist like Sunday Igboho. I am an admirer of Malala Yousafzai, the young Pashtun girl who was literally shot into fame, allegedly by the Taliban. Since fate got me to write my Ph.D dissertation, submitted to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), on Pakistan, I have always had a soft spot for the country. I spent about six months of field trip in the country in 1981 and it was a beautiful learning experience. Malala was shot for daring to continue going to school when the Ta...
