Nigeria’s government has declared Friday and Monday, as Public Holiday to mark this year’s Eid el-Fitr celebration. The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, as he congratulated all Muslims for the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan. The minister urged all Muslims to imbibe and practice the virtues of kindness, love, tolerance, peace, self-denial, sacrifice and good neighbourliness, as exemplified by the Holy Prophet Muhammad. “The self-restrain, self-denial, sacrifice and deep spiritual consciousness that accompanied the fasting period should not end but be maintained and improved upon, in order to be a better person and true worshipper”, the minister advised all Muslims.  Students of Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso in Oyo State, have been barred from driving or bringing cars to the campus. The management of the institution also banned the use of tinted vehicles by staff members and students, adding that learner permits must be placed on the vehicles of beginner drivers. Unauthorized vehicles parked at various locations in the university are to be taken out with immediate effect. Registrar of the institution, Kayode Ogunleye said the decision was reached at a management meeting held on Wednesday, April 19.   The Oyo State Government has vowed to prosecute those it described as undesirable elements, who perpetrate recruitment scams with the sole intent of defrauding innocent public.   This is coming on the heels of a purported list circulating on social media claiming the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, OYOSUBEB, has started its recruitment process.   In a statement on Tuesday, the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB), Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, advised the public to be vigilant and never deal with scammers who pose as recruitment agents for the Board.   Adeniran said the management has also begun moves to identify those perpetrating these fraudulent activities, promising that when caught they will be handed over to appropriate quarters.   He also cautioned job-seekers saying, “please shun any purported list, circulating on the social media claiming we are recruiting”.   The statement added that OYOSUBEB wo...

Nigeria’s inflation rate has risen to 22.04% in March 2023, from 21.91% recorded in February. This is according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS)’ Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released on Saturday. “Looking at the trend, the March 2023 inflation rate showed an increase of 0.13% points when compared to February 2023 headline inflation rate”, the report stated. “On a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate was 6.13% points higher compared to the rate recorded in March 2022 which was 15.92%. “This shows that the headline inflation rate (year-on-year basis) increased in March 2023 when compared to the same month in the preceding year (i.e., March 2022).” The Bureau disclosed that the increase in the food index was driven by increases in prices of oil and fat, bread and cereals, potatoes, yam and other tubers, Fish, fruits, meat, vegetables, and spirits.

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has revealed that N18 billion will be disbursed to six public universities under its Special High Impact Intervention. The Executive Secretary, TETFund, Sunday Echono, said this during a press briefing on Thursday. The TETFUND boss further noted that N3 billion will be given to six selected varsities, N1 billion each to six polytechnics and six colleges of education across the country. He added that over 95 per cent of the 2023 Intervention Budget N320 billion total TETFund’s disbursement of 2023 would go directly to beneficiary tertiary institutions. The remaining five per cent of the allocation, according to Echono, would be used for staff salaries and allowances, project monitoring and zonal capital projects.
