Immortalise National Flag Designer Akinkunmi, Senate Calls on FG

On Tuesday, the Senate called upon the Federal Government to immortalize the late designer of the national flag, Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, who passed away in Ibadan on August 29. Sen. Sharafadeen Alli, representing Oyo South, moved the motion, leading the senators to observe a minute of silence.

The Senate urged the Federal Government to conduct a state burial in Akinkunmi's honor for his significant contribution to the design of the national flag.

During the session, the Senate, acting as the committee of the whole, considered the report of the committee on the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FEMA). The upper chamber approved the appointment of Engineer Chukwuemeka Agbasi as Managing Director of FERMA, along with nine others as members of the agency.

Additionally, the Senate President announced Abba Moro of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the new Minority Leader, replacing Sen. Simon Nwadkwon from Plateau North, who was removed by the court on October 23. However, a disagreement arose when Sen. Osita Ngwu (Enugu West/PDP) was announced as Senate Minority Whip, replacing Sen. Darlington Nwokwocha from the Labour Party. Sen. Okechukwu Ezea from Enugu North objected to the nomination, with support from Sen. Tony Nwoye of the Labour Party, citing the absence of Labour Party representation in the senate leadership. Despite the dispute, the majority decision favored the appointment of Sen. Osita Ngwu as Senate Minority Whip.
