Makinde and the Artificial Alagba |Ogbomoso Info

Perhaps only Governor Seyi Makinde can say with exactness why he presented tortoise to the Soun of Ogbomoso’s Palace. Some school of thought said it is a birthday gift to Soun Oyewumi at 94 while on the other hand they said it is for tourism purpose to attract tourists, who had miss the 344 years old tortoise Alagba that died recently. Even though the Oyo State Ministry of Information and Culture, Tourism have not release any official statement concerning the tortoise, no thanks the Information,Culture,tourism Commissioner was absent on the day of presentation in Ogbomoso.
However, it is not difficult to guess that Makinde’s pilgrimage may not be unconnected with ‘Oselu'(politics). The man, whatever his alleged shortcomings, appears to have a definite beautification strategy.
The striking presence of Commissioner Olaleye, Chairman Toskey spoke volume about the quality of the tortoise offered on his behalf.
But do Makinde and Oyo government know the tortoise called Alagba? Or, more importantly, Can Alagba be replaced with a tortoise for tourism purpose? It may be clarifying to quote from History 001. It is an established fact that nobody can change history, events make history and history is the account of the past events.
Alagba was reported to have been brought into the palace by Isan Okumoyede, the third king of Ogbomoso who reigned from 1770 to 1797. This tortoise has gone from being a king’s pet to being a companion for kings, and he was eventually on his way to becoming a deity in the history of the kingdom.
Alagba served the dead, Oba Okumoyede and many other kings; he entertained the living, many tourists and Ogbomoso indigenes home and abroad who came visiting from across the world; and serve as a golden point in the history of Ogbomoso for many yet unborn.Alagba was more than an animal,a symbol of the tourism and Ogbomoso township.
Should Ogbomosos judged Makinde’s record in governance by the tortoise project? Governor Makinde should look inward and let developmental projects spread to Ogbomoso zone.

The Speaker of the 9th Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon.
