Ogbomoso South is neglected |Adelani Olawuyi

SIR: Ogbomoso zone is made up of five local government areas. Two are in the metropolis while three are in the suburbs. They are Ogbomoso North and Ogbomoso South in the metropolis. The rest are Ogo-Oluwa, Oriire and Surulere. Political abracadabra has given undue advantage to some people to such an extent that all the developmental projects and appointments are cornered and concentrated in Ogbomoso North. Successive administrations both at federal and state levels have failed to correct the mistakes made by the colonial masters. Their actions have been reeking of injustice. They have sidelined Ogbomoso South in the distribution of infrastructures.

Some years ago, it was widely rumoured that the Nigerian Television Authority’s (NTA) community station was going to be established in Ogbomoso South. In fact, people had been congratulating the Onpetu only for the site to be shifted overnight to Ogbomoso North without any cogent reason for it.

The gigantic shopping complex that was constructed during Lam Adesina administration is under-utilised due to its location. Of about 12 commercial banks in Ogbomoso metropolis, only one is in Ogbomoso South. Road construction and/or rehabilitation is concentrated in Ogbomoso North. One can point out the following: the six kilometre Federal Government College/Ogbomoso Grammar School Road that was dualized during the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi’s administration; the three kilometre Oke-Ado Akintola/ LAUTECH stretch being currently constructed by the Seyi Makinde government. Ojatuntun/Apake Road being rehabilitated by the federal government even though about N40 million had earlier been committed to the same road by the Seyi Makinde government. Construction of a mini hospital at Iwagba area by the federal government.

During the tenure of Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, LAUTECH Teaching Hospital and the Health Science Department were constructed less than 600 metres apart. Interestingly, the site of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital is the old general hospital. The crux of it all is that funds to finance these projects were allegedly drawn from the five local government areas in the zone.

What is good for the goose is also good for the gander. What obtained during Otunba Alao-Akala regime was that chairmen of government agencies and majority of members were chosen from Ogbomoso North. However, bait is meant for the fish still in the river and not for the one in the basket. Governments at all levels are beseeched to let equity prevail in the distribution of infrastructures. Oyo State can begin with the dualization of Osuuru river/LAUTECH Teaching Hospital road and construction of the 15km Odo-Oba/Ayede/Ajaawa road.

The Speaker of the 9th Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon.
