Soun: Oyo govt appeals high court ruling

The Oyo State Government has filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal, Ibadan Judicial Division, to challenge a verdict by a High Court in Ogbomoso that overturned the selection and installation of the new Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Olaoye.

The government has also applied for a stay of execution until the appeal is heard and decided upon.

OGBOMOSO INFO had reported that the state government announced Olaoye as the new Soun and made him King, on Friday, September 8, 2023.

The application is also seeking for an order from the Court restraining the claimant/respondent by himself or through his servants, agents, privies or otherwise howsoever prevent him from taking any step or further step in recognition or in pursuance of the Judgment of this Honourable Court, Coram: Honourable Justice K. A. Adedokun delivered on the 25th day of October, 2023 in Suit No: HOG/27/2022 BETWEEN: PRINCE MUHAMMED KABIR OLAOYE V. EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF OYO STATE & 11 ORS. in executing the ruling.

Justice K.A Adedokun had on 25th october in his judgment on suit no HOG/27/2023 between Prince Muhammed Kabir Olaoye Vs The Governor of Oyo State and 11 others said that the procedure for the nomination of the Soun of Ogbomoso the 12th defendant was “ irregular, null and void.’’ for not strictly complying with the provisions of the Soun Chieftaincy declaration of 1958.

The same judge had in a suit no HOG/20/2023 instituted by Prince Taofeeq Akorede Olaoye also challenging Oba Olaoye in which judgment was delivered on October 3, Justice Kareem Adeyimika Adedokun ruled that the procedure was “right, valid and proper.”

Dissatisfied with the judgment, the appeal filed by Akin Onigbinde SAN and Co in Ibadan on behalf of the Executive Governor of Oyo state, Engineer Oluseyi Makinde,  Attorney General and Hon. Commissioner of Justice, Oyo state and Hon. Commissioner  Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy matter.

The notice of appeal dated 27th october is seeking for an order setting aside the Judgment of the Trial Court of 25th October or an order of re-trial before another judge of the Oyo State High Court.

The six ground of appeal pointed out how the Trial Judge erred in his submission and how the judgment of 25th October, 2023 is against the weight of evidence before the Honourable Court.

The respondents includes , Prince Mohammed Kabir Olaoye,  Ogbomoso North Local Government, Kinnira, Ogbomoso, the Traditional Council of Ogbomoso North Kinnira, Ogbomoso, S. A. Mohammed, Esq.

Abdulfatai Omotayo Buhari, senator representing Oyo north senatorial district, says the 2020 budget can only cover 500 roads out of the 3,800 identified as requiring attention across the nation. NECO releases 2022 SSCE external results

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the November/December 2022 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, the registrar of NECO, broke the news on Thursday in Minna, the capital of Niger state. The 2022 SSCE for external candidates was held from November 21 to December 21. The NECO registrar said a total of 59,124 candidates sat for the examination, with 31,316 males, representing 52.96 per cent, while 27,808, representing 47.03 per cent, were female. He said 58,012 candidates sat for the English Language with 44,162, representing 76.13 per cent, getting credit and above. According to Wushishi, the number of candidates who wrote Mathematics is 57,700, out of which 43,096, representing 74.69 per cent, got credit and above. He also disclosed that 46,825 candidates, representing 79.20%, got five credits and above — irrespective of English Language and Mathematics.
