Oyo Govt., National Museum Identify Need for Partnership on Tourism, Cultural Heritage





The need for an expanded partnership between the Oyo State Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism and the National Museum of Unity, Ibadan has been stressed, as this will promote tourism and sustain cultural heritage.

The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun made the announcement today, in Ibadan, during a meeting with the new Curator, National Museum of Unity, Mrs. Oriyomi Pamel Otuka.

He said the Oyo State Government has done its best in creating partnerships with relevant bodies, to help sustain awareness of the Yoruba heritage.

Olatubosun said the Ministry will work with the National Museum to retrieve artefacts that were taken from the State, as this will also attract investors to the State.

"If the artefacts are well managed, it will help increase our Tourism potentials and it will be a good source of revenue generation for the State", he said.

The Curator, National Museum of Unity, Aleshinloye, Ibadan, Mrs. Oriyomi Pamel Otuka, speaking earlier urged Nigerians to visit the museum to foster peace in the country.

The curator said that the museum was put in place in 1976 to foster the Nigerian diverse culture and to help Nigerians identify their origin.

She added that the museum has the power to change people’s mind-set, especially during this period when Nigerian culture needs to be salvaged.

Otuka said that the gallery was the first museum of Unity in the country, adding that it is a specialised museum that tells the story of the rich Nigerian history.

“The museum primarily is used to Foster peace among Nigerians, knowing that we have different cultures and backgrounds. It also gives us a platform to relate our past with our present. We invite people to visit this place, so that we can learn from our past and for us to maintain peace in the country,” she said.

The Curator therefore urged people to visit the museum and learn, adding that the staff members have committed themselves to research.

“The museum is a store for our artefacts. It is a store house where valuables are kept for posterity sake”, she said.

In another development, the Oyo State Government has reiterated its resolve to invest hugely in tourism, adding that revenue accruable from it will be committee to enhance other infrastructures in the State.

This assertion was made by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Oyesola Oyedele during a visit of the Body of Permanent Secretaries in the State to the Tourists' Site.

He said the Oyo State Government has promised to drive the economy of the State through tourism.

Earlier on, the Body of Permanent Secretaries had visited Ikere Gorge Dam, located at Iseyin in Iseyin local government area and Kunle Afolayan’s Film Village at Komu in Itesiwaju local government.

11 dead, five hospitalised as Strange disease hits Oyo Community

At least, 11 persons have been reported dead with five hospitalised following the outbreak of a strange sickness in the Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State. The five persons being hospitalised are said to be battling for survival. Unconfirmed report indicated that it was an outbreak of cholera as the symptoms closely compare with the deadly disease. However, the state government said the claim could not be immediately established as results of samples taken from the victims were still being awaited. Residents of the community said the first case was recorded at Ariku village, where five people had, so far, been reported dead. NECO releases 2022 SSCE external results

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the November/December 2022 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, the registrar of NECO, broke the news on Thursday in Minna, the capital of Niger state. The 2022 SSCE for external candidates was held from November 21 to December 21. The NECO registrar said a total of 59,124 candidates sat for the examination, with 31,316 males, representing 52.96 per cent, while 27,808, representing 47.03 per cent, were female. He said 58,012 candidates sat for the English Language with 44,162, representing 76.13 per cent, getting credit and above. According to Wushishi, the number of candidates who wrote Mathematics is 57,700, out of which 43,096, representing 74.69 per cent, got credit and above. He also disclosed that 46,825 candidates, representing 79.20%, got five credits and above — irrespective of English Language and Mathematics.
