Residents of the cities of Ilobu, Ifon-Osun and Erin-Osun in Irepodun and Orolu local government councils of Osun and motorists plying the Osogbo-Ogbomoso road have called on the federal government to accelerate action and rehabilitate the abandoned highway.
Speaking to newsmen on Tuesday, city residents and commuters expressed fears about the state of the road as the Eid-l-Kabir festival approaches.
In making their demands known, motorists who were specific about the entry and exit points from the Erinle Bridge and the market area from Olobu to Ifon-Osun, described them as deadly traps, adding that accidents usually happen there on a daily basis.
When asking the federal government to mobilize the contractor managing the highway project back to the site, one of the residents, Wasiu Babalola, revealed that motorists sometimes spend up to 30 minutes on the bridge due to poor road conditions.
A hauler, Jelili Olawale revealed that commuters who travel on the road, in addition to spending a lot of time, also spend a lot on spare parts as a result of the poor road network.
“We spend too much time on the road and we also spend a lot of spare parts every week as a result of this bad road. Look at the puddles everywhere. When the work started we thought they would finish it but they have abandoned it for a long time. Even the part of the road that they rehabilitated begins to deteriorate again. We urge President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Gboyega Oyetola to help us. The suffering here is too much. “
When contacted, Ilobu-Asake Development Union Public Relations Officer Kazeem Alabi explained that the road from Erinle Bridge to Ifon-Osun has been very bad.
Alabi also asked the contractor managing the bridge project to complete the grading of the other side to allow for partial movement during the Eid period in order to facilitate movement around the area.
Meanwhile, Osun State Works and Transportation Commissioner Remi Omowaiye, when contacted, said that the state government had finalized plans to take over the highway project from the Lameco-Osogbo crossing to Ifon-Osun.
Omowaiye said the contract work that started from 2013 is taking too long and the state government will finish the road as soon as possible.
